Legislators in Kyrgyzstan complained that the army used too many troops, and too much money, to smash a group of Islamic militants last year. Between August and October of  2000, two thousand troops were sent to the southern border. The army lost 39 dead and 25 wounded, while at least sixty rebels were killed and two captured.  The legislators noted that it had cost some $200,000 for each rebel killed. Five Mi-8 helicopters were also lost, but these were cheap, only costing about a quarter of a million dollars each (Soviet Army surplus.)
