The Pentagon is considering plans that could radically reorganize the way its commands are structured. Currently, a number of CinCs (Commanders in Chief, such as Southern, European, Pacific, Central, etc.) cover the globe. One plan would merge Southern Command, Strategic Command, Space Command, and Joint Forces Command into a homeland and continental defense command. A more radical command would divide the rest of the world into East and West Super-CinC areas. The theory seems to be that a command focused on a narrow region may not have the best perspective for decision making. --Stephen V Cole
