The Marines hand built nine sniper rifles using a new fiber-glass/epoxy stock and existing match-grade M-14 barrels, calling them DMR M-14s (Designated Marksman Rifles). These are superbly accurate, with an effective range of 1,000 meters. Even better, they cost the Corps only $600 to build; an equivalent commercial sniper rifle would cost about $3,000. --Stephen V Cole
