: US ARMY TANK BATTALIONS- The US Army has 29 heavy (M1) tank battalions in active duty units:

1st Armored Division: 1-37, 2-37, 1-35, 1-13, 2-70
1st Cavalry Division: 1-8 Cav, 2-8 Cav, 3-8 Cav, 1-12 Cav, 2-12 Cav.
1st Mechanized Division: 1-63, 2-63, 1-77, 1-34, 2-34
2nd Infantry Division: 1-33, 1-14 Cav, 1-72, 2-72.
3rd Mechanized Division: 2-69, 3-36, 1-64, 4-64.
4th Mechanized Division: 1-68, 1-66, 3-66, 1-67, 3-67.
11th Armored Cavalry: 1/11.

In addition, there are nine heavy recon battalions with a mix of M1 tanks and Bradleys:
1-1 Cav (1st Armored Div), 1-4 Cav (1st Mech Div), 1-7 Cav (1st Cav Div), 4-7 Cav (2nd Inf), 3-7 Cav (3rd Mech Division), 1-10 Cav (4th Mech Div), and three battalions with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. There are also five light recon battalions (using mostly armored humvees): 3 battalions with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, 3-4 (25th Light Division), 3-17 (10th Mountain Division) There are also five separate tank and recon companies: A1-17 (82nd Airborne), E-1 (Alaska), D company 1-4 infantry (a tank unit at Hohenfels, Germany), and D1-509 infantry (in Louisiana). --Stephen V Cole
