CTA, a joint venture between Britain's BAe and France's Giat, is trying to interest the British Army in using the new 40mm cased telescoped weapon system for the expected Warrior fighting vehicle upgrade. Such weapons have a cylinder-shaped cartridge with the projectile inside; a small charge pushes the projectile into the barrel before the main charge explodes. In theory, such weapons can fire faster but are more technologically complicated. --Stephen V Cole
