The Finnish Defense Force has ordered about 100 new XA-202 wheeled 6x6 armored personnel carriers from Patria (the domestic Finnish armored vehicle builder) under a $63 million contract. A few will be delivered this year for training, but the bulk of the vehicles will be delivered in 2002-2004. The XA-202 (and the similar XA-203, which has a raised rear deck for more internal volume and is used for command posts and other duties) are improvements over the XA-200 and XA-201. They have more armor for protection from small arms and mines. Patria is developing a new 8x8 version of the XA series which could have a combat weight of up to 2 tons.--Stephen V Cole
