The Sudan Liberation Army (SLA, in Darfur) said its troops now control the town of al-Fasher. Al-Fasher is the capital of Northern Darfur State. The SLA claimed its troops drove a Sudanese government garrison from the town on April 25. Subsequent reports said fighting continued in the area on April 26. The SLA claims it shot down four government helicopters. It also claims that three Antonov-type planes were shot down (possibly AN-12 type transports used as bombers). Another battle broke out near the town of Kutum. The SLA said it captured four government tanks in that battle. On April 22 the government claimed a victory over the SLA in West Darfur province. The government said its troops took a rebel camp in the Jebel Marrach area. There were no specifics provided on this government operation.
