  The army is still having trouble getting volunteers for the armed forces. The army has appealed to parents to encourage their sons to enlist. Despite the intense fighting with the LTTE rebels, the legislature has refused to pass a conscription law.  Meanwhile, in the north, eight rebels were killed by army patrols.  In the east, a rebel mine killed six policemen and wounded nine others.
