Update on the Burundian Army offensive: Burundi government spokesmen and press reports say that as of December 3, a ten-day long offensive in the Tenga forest has cost the lives of 30 Burundian Army troops. However, at least 100 FNL rebels have been killed in the operation. The offensive appears to be one of the best coordinated operations yet by the Burundian Army. Western press reports indicate extensive use of artillery as well as strafing attacks by Burundian military helicopters, in support of the infantry forces. One report suggested the Burundian Army may attempt to hold part of the forest zone. In the past the army has launched forays and sweeps into the FNL base area but has not maintained a sustained presence.
