Fighting spread through Madagascar. On April 12 Western press sources reported six people were killed in turmoil throughout the island. The biggest clash took place in the town of Fianarantsoa where two rival military units fired on one another. A backer of President Ratsiraka said that an armed group of Ravalomanana supporters attacked a police barrack in Fianarantsoa. On April 13 Ravalomanana supporters reportedly ambushed a pro-Ratasiraka convoy and killed five soldiers. 15 to 18 others were wounded. This attack also occurred in Fianarantsoa.
