Iraq: August 7, 2002

The unofficial debate in the US government over plans for invading Iraq continues. The senior generals are apparently behind the idea, only disagreeing on tactics. Reports from inside Iraq and from Iraqi refugees indicate that the Iraqi army would not be able to put up much of a fight. A dozen years of poor maintenance and spare parts shortages have left most equipment in dismal shape. Morale is low and the government is blamed (although not out loud.) Saddam is increasingly paranoid and quick to violence against suspected traitors.  If there is any invasion, surprise will be difficult. There will be some noticeable build up of American troops in Kuwait or some other nation on the Iraqi border.
