Four unnamed "ringleaders" of the student protests of last July were tried in secret and condemned to death. The protests were not particularly violent until conservative vigilantes, and the police, attacked the protesters and arrested hundreds of them.  

September 11; Iran denied it was developing ICBMs. A recent CIA report had made the charge.

September 8; Iranian and Omani naval forces are engaging in joint exercises. Iran has been trying to improve relations with Arab Gulf states, and defuse the ongoing disputes over the ownership of several islands in the Gulf.

September 5; Conservative Iran courts continue to attack, and close down, pro-democracy newspapers.
