August 1, 2006: A week of tribal war in Papua has left at least one dead, and two dozen wounded. The fighting was done with traditional weapons (arrows and spears). The dispute was over a child from one tribe, who died while in the care of a member of the other tribe. Government and tribal officials have arranged a peace meeting, and traditional ceremonies to settle the dispute. These tribal disputes are fairly common, and government fears that if firearms become more available among the tribesmen, the death toll from these battles will skyrocket.
July 27, 2006: In Papua, three men were arrested for planning to bomb a gold mining facility. One of the men was an Islamic religious teachers. Documents and plans were found on the men.
July 26, 2006: East Timor wants the international community to provide 800 police. The local cops are split by political and regional differences and do not feel capable of maintaining order.
July 18, 2006: Islamic conservatives are increasingly resorting to violence in their attempts to force all Indonesians to adopt conservative Islamic lifestyles. The majority of Indonesians resist this, but a violent minority keeps at it.
