The army claims it now controls all of Aceh, after a six week campaign. The army says there are now only 600-700 rebels operating, out of some 5,000 six weeks ago. But many of these rebels have melted into the civilians population, rather than surrendering or fighting on. The army reported killing nearly 300 rebels during these operations. 

On West Kalimantan island, police stopped another outbreak of ethnic violence between Malays, Dayak tribesmen and migrants from nearby Madura island.
