Radical Islamic parties are staging demonstrations to get the legislature to pass a law imposing Sharia (Islamic) law on the nation's Moslems (85 percent of the 210 million Indonesians are Moslem). But major Moslem organizations have long opposed this. The army announced that it would resist with force any violent demonstrations by radical Moslems trying to influence the legislature. The army did say it would obey the law if the legislature did adopt Sharia law for Moslems. In the Malukus, several hundred Moslems attacked a Christian village, killing three Christians.
