India-Pakistan: October 30, 2004

Archives

In Pakistan, the government took advantage of the October 25 attack on tribal leaders, by anti-government tribesmen, by paying compensation of $8,000 for each tribal leader killed, and $3,500 for each one wounded. The majority of the tribesmen are willing to let the army and police search for and find al Qaeda foreigners living in the tribal areas along the Afghan border. The attacks on the tribal leaders, by the pro-al Qaeda tribesmen, merely drove more tribesmen to back the government policy. It's unprecedented for the army to operate in the tribal areas, but there they are. Far more tribesmen are aiding the army than are attacking it.
