  The increased violence has caused many Colombians to emigrate. In the last five years, over a million have left. In the first nine months of this year, 225,000 Colombians left the country for good. That was the same number that left for all of 1999. Colombia's population is now about 39 million, but most of those leaving are middle class, further weakening the economy.
