Five Uighurs were sentenced to death for separatist activities in Uighur areas of western China. Five others were given prison sentences. The condemned were accused of taking part in 1997 unrest that led to violence and the death of as many as a hundred people. mostly civilians, when police put down the disturbance in Uighur populated areas.
