While Turkey has publicly welcomed the Israeli-Syrian peace talks, it remains deeply concerned over their implications. Syrian troops removed from the Israeli border under a peace treaty might well be sent to the Turkish border. The Turks complain that the Israelis did not consult them during the 1995 talks, and have been slow to provide Ankara with assurances that Israeli-Turkish military ties will remain strong. --Stephen V Cole
