In central Afghanistan, two men opened fire on soldiers destroying a poppy crop. One soldier was killed, as were the two attackers. The two dead men were known locally as Taliban supporters. It is feared that the Taliban will attempt to sustain itself by joining forces with drug gangs. Such a situation is common in areas where drug production takes hold (like Colombia and Burma). Rebel groups and the drug gangs both have an interest in keeping the police out of their territory.
