In Kandahar, a pro-government (and anti-Taliban) mullah (Mawlawi Hamdullah) was murdered by unidentified gunmen. But the killers were thought to be Taliban, which have made no secret of their displeasure over mullahs preaching against them. 

Government troops clashed with Taliban 320 kilometers southwest of the capital, killing fifteen and capturing another 12. 

Taliban attacks doubled between April and May. So far, 30 American soldiers have been killed fighting in Afghanistan since late 2001. The UN has called for nations to contribute another 10,000 peacekeepers so that battalions can be placed in 10-12 cities. But no nations have step forward. Afghanistan is seen as a very dangerous place for peacekeeping.
