Poland plans to maintain an Air Force of 10 squadrons with 160 tactical fighters. The 98 old Su-22s will be refurbished to keep them flying until 2015. Of these, 36 will get Israeli electronics allowing them to deploy precision-guided weapons. A dozen of the MiG-29s have been upgraded (including commercial GPS systems and NATO compatible IFF units) and a few more will be. Poland still plans to acquire 60 used Western fighters to fill out its force. In 2012, Poland wants to buy a single new aircraft (probably the US Joint Strike Fighter) to replace the MiG-29, Su-22, and whatever interim Western fighters it can buy.--Stephen V Cole
