Peacekeeping: Iran and Georgia

August 18,2008:  The 2,000 Georgian troops in Iraq were hastily (within a week) flown home after the Russians invaded on August 8th. U.S. and Iraqi troops had to quickly take over the checkpoints and patrols that the Georgians had handled. The Georgians occupied a sector along the Iranian border, and were heavily involved in stopping Iranian weapons from being smuggled into the country.
