Three Special Forces soldiers have been awarded the Silver Star for bravery in Afghanistan. Two, Master Sgt. Jefferson Davis and Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Petithory, received theirs posthumously. Master Sgt. Anthony S. Pryor, recently received his in person. Pryor was involved in a January, 2002 raid on a compound full of Taliban Afghans. A firefight broke out, leaving 23 Afghans dead, but no Americans. Pryor went into a room alone and confronted four armed Afghans, killing all four, including one, who jumped on his back, in hand to hand combat. Pryor ended up with a broken collarbone and a dislocated shoulder. Sergeants Davis and Petithory received their award for organizing anti-Taliban Afghans in southern Afghanistan and fighting off a much larger number of Taliban troops in November, 2001. Both sergeants were killed the next month in a friendly fire incident involving a smart bomb.
