In contrast to the enormous popular and academic interest in the Civil War, the American Revolution has been very neglected. Thus, General William Maxwell and the New Jersey Continenals is a relatively rare work. It is also a rather valuable one. Not only does it provide a good biography of a competent commander, but its treatment of the life and activities of a Continental Army brigade is rather unique. In addition, the work includes treatment of what is perhaps the most forgotten major battle of the war, Springfield, fought on June 23, 1780, which more or less put the damper on the last British attempt to undertake an overland campaign in the central theater.
